Punta Negra and Dancing with New Friends

Our second day in San Juan, we were given the option to board a bus in the morning and travel an hour to Punta Negra or stay behind and attend lectures and explore the new city. Some of the group stayed behind to catch up on rest or walk around town but most of chose to see this beautiful lake and dam. The hour bus ride was nothing compared to the rest of the traveling we’d been doing and we were greeted by a view of a beautiful reservoir, dam and mountains. We learned that the dam helps generate hydro electric power for the province. When we arrived we learned that kayaking and pedal boating was available. We had a lot of fun exploring the water or staying on shore skipping rocks. After we enjoyed the reservoir, we walked up the hill to the restaurant and we enjoyed a lunch featuring punta de espalda, which was recommended to us by new friends we met there. After lunch, we headed back to town to get ready for the opening ceremony of the festival.

All the competing groups met that night at a community center where we sang one piece for each other and got to watch tango and malomba numbers. It was a great introduction into the festival and the city of San Juan. We got sandwiches and fruit after for a light dinner before most of our group walked back to the hotel, but for the few of us that stayed, a very fun night was in store.

After a brief meal, they dimmed the lights and through a dance party. Our group were the only Americans there so we didn’t know any of the songs or the dance moves but we jumped in the dance circle anyway. People were more than happy to show us how it was done. We would go on to formally meet so many of these people in the coming days, but that night we shared music and dance with them and it was one my favorite moments of the trip.

Day 2 - Drake Hammack - Buenos Aries!!

Today we landed in Buenos Aires and got our first taste of the new sights, sounds and cultures we get to experience on this tour. After finishing a long 9 hour plane ride -and getting through customs- we took taxis to our hotel which lies right in the middle of downtown. Just walking through the streets of downtown was a great experience, many beautiful buildings surround the area. Some standouts for me were the museum and the cathedral. Packed in between the wonderful architecture were so many little shops and food vendors it was hard to choose which ones to stop at and which to walk by. Eventually the group I was with stopped at a bookstore. The store was decorated from top to bottom in antique signs and furniture, and the whole store had that old book smell. We even found a shelf full of classical music recordings, full of a bunch of composers and pieces a bunch of music nerds on a choir tour instantly recognized. After leaving the bookstore we found a small restaurant to grab ...

Day 1 - Tristen Bara - Travel Day Fun!(?)

Hi everyone! This is Tristen, a soprano of Shrine. Our first day of tour was simply a travel days, and we’ve experienced some bumps along the road (as anyone would). Our first flight out of PHX to ATL got delayed about 90 minutes total, and our whole group arrived around 11am for check-in, so we hung out at the airport for quite some time! Most of us circled up and played some card games (a lot of us in Shrine love card games, so we had basically an unlimited variety of decks and options!). Our first plane finally arrived around 2:30.  Our first flight wasn’t too bad! Little turbulence, we all managed to stay awake to sleep on our long flight. In the last hour of the flight a group of us randomly started a trivia game we found on our small seat screens! I believe another soprano, Ava, ended up winning it all!  We finally reached Atlanta, and all of us SPRINTED to the nearest shuttle to get to our next gate, when lo and behold our next flight has also been delayed. This one end...

Day 1 - Jane Carreón - First Time Flyer Tips

Hey there, future jet setter! As someone who's flown more times than I can count, I know how overwhelming flying can be, especially if you're new to it or don't know the tricks of flying. But don't worry - I've got you covered with some tried and true the tips to make your first place smooth and enjoyable.  1. Food Matters - Pack Smart Airport service is often overpriced and underwhelming (except for the Panera I found in Terminal 3 before our flight today - yum!). I always pack snacks like trail mix, protein bars, and fruit snacks to keep my energy up without feeling sluggish. Avoid greasy foods before flying; they can mess with your stomach when you're a mile high in the sky! Also, stay hydrated - bring an empty water bottle to fill post security.  2. Nervous? Breathe, Distract, Repeat  Feeling anxious for poor and during flying is totally normal. I still get antsy during every takeoff and landing. What helps me is downloading calming music, my favorite movies...
