Day 8: ¡Ciao! Buenos Aires, Hola San Juan

Buenos díaz/tardes/noches!! Shrine of the Ages has departed Buenos Aires and landed in San Juan which is the location of the San Juan Canta festival we will be performing at. After a short 1 hour 30 minute plane ride we were whisked away to our 4-star hotel on a double decker bus. You know those buses they have all around the UK? Yeah, it was one of those.

After a quick bus ride to our hotel, we were dismissed to freshen up and grab a bite to eat. The hardest part of the trip for me personally has been finding foods to fit my dietary needs. I am gluten intolerant and it has been a bit difficult finding “comida sin gluten” in a place with heavy Italian influence in their cuisine, but somehow, I manage.

My favorite part of the day which also has been my favorite part of the tour is when we visited “Colegio Secundario Augusto Pulenta” in the city of San Martin. Here, we sang 4 of our repertoire for high school students and in exchange, they shared a part of their culture with us, a dance. As a dancer I found this dance to be very beautiful and will definitely do more research on its cultural influence. I was so grateful that they shared a part of their culture with us as a gift. After the performance, we had the opportunity to mingle with the students which was so lovely, everyone was so kind and excited to meet and talk to us. There was one student who I complemented her hair scrunchie and she gave it to me. It threw me so off guard but I almost started crying she was so nice.

The exchange was definitely my favorite of the trip so far, the students were skeptical at first, but once we started singing, they were in awe. We also got to experience a performance of a traditional song from San Juan! This experience left the choir in high spirits as we headed about 5 minutes away on a wine tour where we got to see one of the best wineries in Argentina!

Dinner was definitely another highlight of today, I went with Sam Martin and Sam Smith to the Maño Rojo to enjoy some good steaks. Muy Bien I must say. Funny enough, we saw Dr. Westerhaus and other faculty of the San Juan Canta festival at the same restaurant! San Juan is so pretty and such a different vibe than Buenos Aires. I am expecting lots of fun to be had here on our second and last week of this tour. ¡Nos Vemos!

Day 2 - Drake Hammack - Buenos Aries!!

Today we landed in Buenos Aires and got our first taste of the new sights, sounds and cultures we get to experience on this tour. After finishing a long 9 hour plane ride -and getting through customs- we took taxis to our hotel which lies right in the middle of downtown. Just walking through the streets of downtown was a great experience, many beautiful buildings surround the area. Some standouts for me were the museum and the cathedral. Packed in between the wonderful architecture were so many little shops and food vendors it was hard to choose which ones to stop at and which to walk by. Eventually the group I was with stopped at a bookstore. The store was decorated from top to bottom in antique signs and furniture, and the whole store had that old book smell. We even found a shelf full of classical music recordings, full of a bunch of composers and pieces a bunch of music nerds on a choir tour instantly recognized. After leaving the bookstore we found a small restaurant to grab ...

Day 1 - Tristen Bara - Travel Day Fun!(?)

Hi everyone! This is Tristen, a soprano of Shrine. Our first day of tour was simply a travel days, and we’ve experienced some bumps along the road (as anyone would). Our first flight out of PHX to ATL got delayed about 90 minutes total, and our whole group arrived around 11am for check-in, so we hung out at the airport for quite some time! Most of us circled up and played some card games (a lot of us in Shrine love card games, so we had basically an unlimited variety of decks and options!). Our first plane finally arrived around 2:30.  Our first flight wasn’t too bad! Little turbulence, we all managed to stay awake to sleep on our long flight. In the last hour of the flight a group of us randomly started a trivia game we found on our small seat screens! I believe another soprano, Ava, ended up winning it all!  We finally reached Atlanta, and all of us SPRINTED to the nearest shuttle to get to our next gate, when lo and behold our next flight has also been delayed. This one end...

Day 1 - Jane Carreón - First Time Flyer Tips

Hey there, future jet setter! As someone who's flown more times than I can count, I know how overwhelming flying can be, especially if you're new to it or don't know the tricks of flying. But don't worry - I've got you covered with some tried and true the tips to make your first place smooth and enjoyable.  1. Food Matters - Pack Smart Airport service is often overpriced and underwhelming (except for the Panera I found in Terminal 3 before our flight today - yum!). I always pack snacks like trail mix, protein bars, and fruit snacks to keep my energy up without feeling sluggish. Avoid greasy foods before flying; they can mess with your stomach when you're a mile high in the sky! Also, stay hydrated - bring an empty water bottle to fill post security.  2. Nervous? Breathe, Distract, Repeat  Feeling anxious for poor and during flying is totally normal. I still get antsy during every takeoff and landing. What helps me is downloading calming music, my favorite movies...
