Day 14- Farewell Argentina Tour!

Hello to everyone who has kept up with our tour and supported us along the way! You may have noticed that your “choraliers” are back at home in the United States! When I sat down (sick and jet lagged, as I imagine everyone is) to construct my blog post I was initially disappointed that I would only get to report on our fourteen hours of flying and the hour long (only mildly uncomfortable) uber that I took home… BUT then I realized that I had actually been granted the unique opportunity to reflect on this tour as a whole and report back to y’all my favorite experiences!

Argentina Tour Highlights: (as told by Ava Marie Pack :)

  • Coffee/Café

I am a certified coffee enthusiast and I would be remiss if I didn’t report on the amazing coffee in Buenos Aires and San Juan. I was particularly fond of Café con dulce de lèche (yet another aspect of Argentina that will be sincerely missed).

  • The Subte!

The Buenos Aires underground metro system was a godsend in navigating the city and exploring nearby towns!

  • Barrio Chino (China Town)

I was lucky enough to spend a few hours in Barrio Chino, a neighborhood in Buenos Aires, and I had one of the best meals of the entire trip there! (I will not be attaching a photo of the meal because I ate it so quickly that I hadn’t even considered to stop and snap a pic) But TRUST, it was the best noodle dish I have ever had.

SPEED RUN HIGHLIGHTS: Cementerio de la Recoleta, Teatro de Colón, Catedral de La Plata

Everywhere we went was so overwhelmingly beautiful and caked in historical significance. The awe I felt exploring these places will continue to live in my mind for as long as I live. But the real jewel of this tour, what will continue to live in my heart for as long as I live, is the unfaltering kindness of the people we met along the way. Music truly transcends all earthly defining qualities of man: language, nationality, race, ethnicity, religion, etc. And to be able to create such beautiful music with such a wide array of people was the biggest gift this tour has given me!

Special thanks to: Chowie from Tous Ensemble, Isabella from Conservatorio de Música de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Etelinda, and all of the kind singers from Bloesem Ensamble Vocal, Coro Municipal De Jóvenes De Córdoba, and all of the participating choirs!

Farewell Argentina! You will be missed! 🇦🇷✨

Day 2 - Drake Hammack - Buenos Aries!!

Today we landed in Buenos Aires and got our first taste of the new sights, sounds and cultures we get to experience on this tour. After finishing a long 9 hour plane ride -and getting through customs- we took taxis to our hotel which lies right in the middle of downtown. Just walking through the streets of downtown was a great experience, many beautiful buildings surround the area. Some standouts for me were the museum and the cathedral. Packed in between the wonderful architecture were so many little shops and food vendors it was hard to choose which ones to stop at and which to walk by. Eventually the group I was with stopped at a bookstore. The store was decorated from top to bottom in antique signs and furniture, and the whole store had that old book smell. We even found a shelf full of classical music recordings, full of a bunch of composers and pieces a bunch of music nerds on a choir tour instantly recognized. After leaving the bookstore we found a small restaurant to grab ...

Day 1 - Tristen Bara - Travel Day Fun!(?)

Hi everyone! This is Tristen, a soprano of Shrine. Our first day of tour was simply a travel days, and we’ve experienced some bumps along the road (as anyone would). Our first flight out of PHX to ATL got delayed about 90 minutes total, and our whole group arrived around 11am for check-in, so we hung out at the airport for quite some time! Most of us circled up and played some card games (a lot of us in Shrine love card games, so we had basically an unlimited variety of decks and options!). Our first plane finally arrived around 2:30.  Our first flight wasn’t too bad! Little turbulence, we all managed to stay awake to sleep on our long flight. In the last hour of the flight a group of us randomly started a trivia game we found on our small seat screens! I believe another soprano, Ava, ended up winning it all!  We finally reached Atlanta, and all of us SPRINTED to the nearest shuttle to get to our next gate, when lo and behold our next flight has also been delayed. This one end...

Day 1 - Jane Carreón - First Time Flyer Tips

Hey there, future jet setter! As someone who's flown more times than I can count, I know how overwhelming flying can be, especially if you're new to it or don't know the tricks of flying. But don't worry - I've got you covered with some tried and true the tips to make your first place smooth and enjoyable.  1. Food Matters - Pack Smart Airport service is often overpriced and underwhelming (except for the Panera I found in Terminal 3 before our flight today - yum!). I always pack snacks like trail mix, protein bars, and fruit snacks to keep my energy up without feeling sluggish. Avoid greasy foods before flying; they can mess with your stomach when you're a mile high in the sky! Also, stay hydrated - bring an empty water bottle to fill post security.  2. Nervous? Breathe, Distract, Repeat  Feeling anxious for poor and during flying is totally normal. I still get antsy during every takeoff and landing. What helps me is downloading calming music, my favorite movies...
