Day 10 - Liliya F. - Big Hot Dogs

Hello! I started this day off right with the best drink ever invented: espresso and condensed milk. Vivian and I tried this drink during one of our first days in Buenos Aires and I think it may have changed the course of my life forever… it aligned my coffee chakras. It was a beautiful morning in San Juan; the weather was perfect and the sun was warm and it made for a cheerful walk to and from the hotel. We had a short performance at a historic home for some of the locals and some members of the other choirs that are participating in the San Juan Canta festival. The home belonged to one of the former presidents of Argentina and his impact is still clearly felt and beloved by the people of San Juan. The home itself had been turned into a well groomed museum and was open for members of the public to get a glimpse of Argentinian life during the 1800s. We sang four of our pieces: Domine, Leron Leron, Soneto De La Noche, and De Colores. Each of the pieces included brief introductions about the background of the piece or interesting musical elements that were present within the piece to engage the audience a bit more.

After our performance, we stepped outside of the house with one goal in mind:

Go get big hot dogs.

Murmurings of hot dogs floated around the historic house… many of us wanted to make our dreams come true… we were determined to make it happen. A small group of us marched forward towards the corner shop and the promise of a tasty treat lingered in the air. We placed our orders and waited anxiously. As time passed people grew impatient. Where were our hot dogs? What could be taking so long? Friends traded anxious glances… and then suddenly! The hot dogs arrived! And they were HUGE!!! Did my eyes deceive me? Could this be real? We were joyous. As far as boiled hot dogs go they weren’t bad. See image for more details.

After lunch we ventured towards the concert hall for a combined rehearsal with 400 singers. We rehearsed two pieces: Across the Vast, Eternal Sky and Rejoice in the Lord Alway. I really enjoy singing the first combined piece with everyone. Singing with such a large choir feels like a little treat and I tried to take in every moment of it. I made friends with the people singing around me (despite the language barrier) and we bonded over the love of the game. After rehearsal we had a small break and a group of us explored the area around the venue. We ended up befriending a kittie cat and exploring a park. There was a pond with big, big koi fish and cool ducks. It was awesome.

Skipping forward, the concert went very well and we all sang our best. I was disappointed to be singing the first half of our set for the last time but I was really pleased with our performance. Singing in front of an audience of all choir members feels very rewarding and I think all of us were happy to have put our best foot forward.

Day 2 - Drake Hammack - Buenos Aries!!

Today we landed in Buenos Aires and got our first taste of the new sights, sounds and cultures we get to experience on this tour. After finishing a long 9 hour plane ride -and getting through customs- we took taxis to our hotel which lies right in the middle of downtown. Just walking through the streets of downtown was a great experience, many beautiful buildings surround the area. Some standouts for me were the museum and the cathedral. Packed in between the wonderful architecture were so many little shops and food vendors it was hard to choose which ones to stop at and which to walk by. Eventually the group I was with stopped at a bookstore. The store was decorated from top to bottom in antique signs and furniture, and the whole store had that old book smell. We even found a shelf full of classical music recordings, full of a bunch of composers and pieces a bunch of music nerds on a choir tour instantly recognized. After leaving the bookstore we found a small restaurant to grab ...

Day 1 - Tristen Bara - Travel Day Fun!(?)

Hi everyone! This is Tristen, a soprano of Shrine. Our first day of tour was simply a travel days, and we’ve experienced some bumps along the road (as anyone would). Our first flight out of PHX to ATL got delayed about 90 minutes total, and our whole group arrived around 11am for check-in, so we hung out at the airport for quite some time! Most of us circled up and played some card games (a lot of us in Shrine love card games, so we had basically an unlimited variety of decks and options!). Our first plane finally arrived around 2:30.  Our first flight wasn’t too bad! Little turbulence, we all managed to stay awake to sleep on our long flight. In the last hour of the flight a group of us randomly started a trivia game we found on our small seat screens! I believe another soprano, Ava, ended up winning it all!  We finally reached Atlanta, and all of us SPRINTED to the nearest shuttle to get to our next gate, when lo and behold our next flight has also been delayed. This one end...

Day 1 - Jane Carreón - First Time Flyer Tips

Hey there, future jet setter! As someone who's flown more times than I can count, I know how overwhelming flying can be, especially if you're new to it or don't know the tricks of flying. But don't worry - I've got you covered with some tried and true the tips to make your first place smooth and enjoyable.  1. Food Matters - Pack Smart Airport service is often overpriced and underwhelming (except for the Panera I found in Terminal 3 before our flight today - yum!). I always pack snacks like trail mix, protein bars, and fruit snacks to keep my energy up without feeling sluggish. Avoid greasy foods before flying; they can mess with your stomach when you're a mile high in the sky! Also, stay hydrated - bring an empty water bottle to fill post security.  2. Nervous? Breathe, Distract, Repeat  Feeling anxious for poor and during flying is totally normal. I still get antsy during every takeoff and landing. What helps me is downloading calming music, my favorite movies...
